The 2019 World 5G Convention -- the world's first international conference with the aim of promoting the 5G industry -- opened in the Beijing Economic Technological Development Area in the Chinese capital on Nov 20.

The four-day event at the development area, also known as the BDA, carried the theme: "5G Changes the World, 5G Creates the Future".

The organizers said it featured internationalization, high-end orientation and specialization. Focused on boosting 5G applications growth both at home and abroad, it consisted of a conference and forum segment, an exhibition segment and an applications design competition.

Organizers said it aimed to create a high-quality platform for global 5G industry cooperation and resource integration, fully tap the huge potential of the 5G industry and promote collaborative innovation, promotion and development of 5G technology in the world.

Among those attending the event were scientists in the information and communications field from all round the world, leading international 5G upstream and downstream companies, users in the 5G industry and well-known investors.

They conducted exchanges and discussions on cutting-edge technologies, industry trends and innovative applications in the 5G field.

At the closing ceremony of the convention on Nov 23, the BDA officially released a 5G industry plan and its supporting policies.

Officials explained that the BDA would focus on key areas to create a variety of application scenarios, promote the deep integration of 5G and the real economy and enable the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries.

In addition, the BDA signed six 5G industrial project cooperation framework agreements during the event.

Established in 1992, the BDA was approved by China’s State Council as the only national economic technological development area in Beijing on August 25, 1994.

After more than a decade of subsequent growth and development, the BDA transformed from a large plot of farming land into an industrial base for high and new technologies and modern manufacturing.

Officials said it was still marching forwards in great strides towards its goal of becoming a high-end industrial zone oriented to the global market.

In recent years, the BDA has grasped the development opportunities of informatization, networking and intelligent integration and has accumulated a solid foundation for the development of new industries such as 5G.

Some 100 upstream and downstream enterprises in the 5G industry chain have been settled in the BDA and a complete 5G industry chain has been formed in the area.

The BDA has also created a number of 5G + application scenarios -- such as intelligent networked test sites, intelligent manufacturing factories and the urban internet of things. It also participated in the launch of the first 5G industry-oriented special fund for the 5G industry chain in China -- the Beijing 5G Industry Fund.

BDA officials said the development area continues to optimize its business environment for the 5G industry.

They said it is continuously improving its investment and service system and actively integrating sophisticated policies and measures such as technological innovation, talent services and financial support.

Officials added that it is striving to attract 5G industrial projects to locate and develop in the area and build 5G industrial parks.
